LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Bella Sikes and her fiancé John are preparing for a wedding day they will never forget, though not entirely for the reasons they expected.
Amy Sikes, mother of the bride, says they received a call months after planning informing them that a major event was planned nearby on the wedding day.
“Texas Tech Athletics was hosting a big event at the stadium on the same night – we didn’t know it was – probably not for two months that we knew that it was actually going to be George Strait,” Amy said.
Reception venue sits across from concert location
The reception will be held at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion, located across the street from where the concert will take place. The couple may hear George Strait’s music in the background as they end their night with friends and family.
Challenges of planning the wedding
With most details already booked, Bella said the past few months have been challenging.
“I would say there were many tears and a lot of anxiousness of the unknown kind of was scary to me of how this would look and if we should continue with it,” Bella said.
Amy said Texas Tech has helped the family navigate the situation.
“But I would say Texas Tech has pulled through, they were more than gracious to help us with arrangements and parking and transportation and just getting our people where they needed to be,” Amy said.
Looking back on the big day
Bella said the coincidence will make the day memorable.
“I think it’s something with all the anxiety we have had kind of leading up, that we will definitely look back and laugh and just be like what a crazy coincidence that our wedding was the same night as the George Strait concert in Lubbock,” Bella said.
Bella says even if the party doesn’t last a long time, it’ll be a good time, extending an invite to all of the artists performing this weekend.
“I mailed all six performing artists a personal invitation with a little handwritten note kind of saying the same thing, if you have some free time, feel free to pop over, we will have food and drinks, yeah if they see this, come on over,” Bella said.
