A man who spent more than two decades evading US authorities after fleeing during his criminal trial has been arrested aboard a sailboat off the coast of New York.Ronald L. Fischer, 70, was taken into custody by US Marshals after investigators traced him to a 56-foot sailing vessel during a multi-agency operation involving the FBI and the US Coast Guard.According to the New York Post, authorities intercepted the boat about an hour offshore and arrested Fischer without resistance.
Fled before trial ended
Fischer had disappeared from Rhode Island in 2005 while standing trial on charges of sexually assaulting a woman aboard his yacht two years earlier. Despite his absence, the court proceeded with the case and convicted him in absentia of first-degree sexual assault.Before fleeing, Fischer reportedly told his attorney in an email that although he believed he would be acquitted, he was unwilling to risk a conviction and had decided to leave the United States to begin a new life abroad, NYP reported.Investigators said he remained wanted on charges including first-degree sexual assault, failure to appear and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Lived under aliases
Officials said Fischer, a former anaesthesiologist and experienced sailor, allegedly used more than a dozen aliases while on the run. The sailboat he was operating, The Silver Lining, was registered under the name “Richard Graydon,” one of the identities linked to him.The breakthrough came after authorities developed fresh intelligence on Fischer’s whereabouts over a 48-hour period.The Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force worked alongside the FBI, the US Marshals Service’s New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Southern District of New York and the US Coast Guard to locate and intercept the vessel.
Featured on TV’s ‘America’s Most Wanted ‘
During his years as a fugitive, Fischer’s case was featured several times on the television programme America’s Most Wanted, which profiles wanted criminals in an effort to generate public tips.US Marshal for the District of Rhode Island Wing Chau said the arrest reflected law enforcement’s long-term commitment to tracking fugitives.“This arrest demonstrates that time does not erase accountability,” Chau said, adding that authorities hoped the arrest would bring long-awaited closure to the victim and others affected by the case.
What happens next?
Following the arrest, Fischer was brought to Staten Island before being transferred to Manhattan.Authorities are now expected to determine whether he will first face federal proceedings related to his alleged flight from prosecution or undergo extradition proceedings before being returned to Rhode Island.The investigation remains ongoing, officials said.
