Although we were all busy trying to survive our first year living in the age of smartphones in 2008, a little boy named Matthew Berger was busy doing something much more important – accidentally changing the history of mankind! The nine-year-old boy was on an excursion with his father, who is a renowned paleoanthropologist named Lee Berger. It was while running after his dog through the area in Malapa, South Africa, that the boy discovered a small piece of limestone. On close inspection, the boy noticed that a white bone protruded from the dark rock.That moment of intrigue led to excavations that ultimately revealed the astonishingly well-preserved fossilised remains of a young male and an adult female. These were not creatures previously known to science. The Australopithecus sediba – meaning “fountain” or “wellspring” in the native Sotho tongue – fossils were an astounding amalgamation of the archaic and the contemporary. In effect, nature appeared to have fused the elongated limbs characteristic of an arboreal ape with the refined hands and pelvic structure of humans.A mosaic of features that befuddled scientistsThe unveiling of Sediba was nothing short of a shock to the scientific community due to the extensive anatomical information it provided. It appears that some researchers regard Sediba as a direct ancestor of the human genus, while others consider that the creature represented a unique side branch and eventually became extinct. Nevertheless, wherever it belongs on the timeline, the discovery showed that the evolution from our apelike ancestors into humans was much more complicated and “mosaic-like” than was thought before.

Matthew Berger’s accidental find didn’t just add a new name to a textbook; it gave us a mirror to look into the eyes of an ancestor who lived on the edge of becoming human.At the present time, Malapa is considered to be one of the most notable sites where fossils can be found and studied by scientists from around the globe.
