Bokaro student develops AI weather system to predict cloudbursts

Bokaro: A Class IX student of DPS Bokaro has developed an artificial intelligence-based weather warning system that could predict the possibility of cloudbursts and provide crucial time for disaster management agencies to act in case of such events. Shrestha Chaturvedi’s project was selected under the Centre’s INSPIRE-MANAK award scheme.Cloudbursts, which bring extremely heavy rainfall over a small area within a short period, have caused massive destruction in Himalayan states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The system analyses real-time atmospheric conditions by studying parameters such as temperature fluctuation, humidity levels, air pressure changes, wind speed and direction. It then integrates weather radar and satellite data to prepare a detailed analysis of changing weather patterns.Developed with over six months of coding and data research, the project was created under the guidance of DPS Bokaro principal A S Gangwar and mentor teacher Mohammad Obaidullah Ansari, school authorities said.Shrestha said, “Weather conditions are extremely complex and unpredictable. My objective was not to claim 100% accurate prediction, but to create a scientific system to provide early risk assessment. The probability engine compares present weather conditions with historical climate data and estimates the chances of a cloudburst in a particular area.”The system’s probability engine is designed to identify dangerous weather patterns and provide advance alerts. “If verified by meteorological authorities, such warnings could help evacuate vulnerable people, restrict movement in risky areas, temporarily close schools and prepare rescue teams before a disaster strikes,” he said.Gangwar said, “The innovation can become a milestone in disaster management. It also reflects the student’s concern for society and his desire to use science for saving lives.”Son of an Odisha-based businessman, Ajay Kumar Chaturvedi, and Bokaro teacher Sammi Chaturvedi, Shrestha dreams of becoming a scientist. “I am also passionate about music and singing,” he said.
