Iowa weather: Storms move through central Iowa
OF TEN DISTRICTS STATEWIDE SELECTED TO RECEIVE THIS GRANT. WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE SKIES AND WATCHING THE WEATHER ALL NIGHT, WATCHING, WATCHING, WATCHING AND, IN A KIND OF A WAITING, WAITING. TICK TICK TICK. STORMS. HEY, WE’RE NOT COMPLAINING. YEAH, I’M JUST SAYING GET OUT OF HERE AT THIS POINT. YEAH, BECAUSE WE’VE HAD PLENTY OF RAIN NOW. I MEAN, WE’VE HAD DROUGHT HELP. YEAH. THEY HAVEN’T BEEN BAD. LET’S JUST SEE THE REST OF THEM GET ON OUT OF HERE. AND YOU CAN SEE WE’VE GOT A FEW THAT ARE STILL LINGERING UPWARDS TOWARDS GRANGER AND UPWARDS TOWARDS DENISON AS WELL. THAT’S LIGHTER VARIETY STUFF. AND ANYTHING THAT’S STRONGER RIGHT NOW LOOKS TO BE IN NORTHEASTERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE. YOU CAN SEE A WHOLE LOT OF LIGHTNING NORTHEAST OF MARSHALLTOWN UPWARDS TOWARDS MANCHESTER AND OFF TO THE NORTHWEST. WE’VE GOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT OF A MIX THAT’S FALLING FOR PORTIONS OF KOSSUTH COUNTY WESTWARD TOWARDS SPENCER. STRONGER STORM NEAR JEFFERSON, THOUGH, AGAIN, WE DON’T HAVE ANYTHING SEVERE ON THE MAP CURRENTLY WHERE WE WOULD SEE THAT AND WHERE WE HAD SEEN THAT PRIOR WAS OFF THROUGH WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE STATE. THESE STORMS ARE ACTUALLY ELEVATED AND THEY’RE BEHIND THE FRONT, BUT THOSE CAN STILL PUMP OUT SOME LARGE HAILSTONES. AT TIMES, THOUGH, THEY ARE NOT AT THE MOMENT, MOISTURE CONTINUING TO SPILL ITS WAY INTO THAT SOUTHEASTERN PORTION OF THE STATE. AND THAT’S WHERE THE MAIN TRAIL OF MOISTURE IS GOING TO BE AS WE HEAD INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. SO WE HAD SOME ROBUST STORMS PUSH THEIR WAY OVER THE METRO. WELL, WE COULD SEE MORE AS THIS CONTINUES TO FILL IN FROM THE SOUTH. BUT TORNADO WATCH STILL IN PLACE THROUGH 4:00 IN THE MORNING. AND AGAIN AS THE STORMS CONTINUE TO PUSH IN, WE’LL SEE. THERE’S ALWAYS BEEN A LOT OF UNCERTAINTY WITH TODAY’S FORECAST, BUT WE’LL SEE WHAT THESE CAN MUSTER UP. STRONGER ONES SHOULD BE KIND OF ON THE SOUTHERN EDGE OF THAT. THOSE EVENTUALLY LEAVE AND WE WILL BE LEFT WITH SOME STRAY SNOW SHOWERS UP TO THE NORTHWEST AND AGAIN, SOME POTENTIAL FOR A LITTLE BIT OF LIGHT GLAZING. AND THEN, WELL, THE GLORIOUS SUNSHINE RETURNS. SATURDAY IS LOOKING GOOD. IT WILL BE BREEZY WITH WINDS OUT OF THE NORTH, BUT THOSE WINDS TURN OUT OF THE SOUTH ON SUNDAY AND IT’S GOING TO HELP TO PUSH THAT TEMPERATURE BACK INTO THE MIDDLE 60S. IT IS GOING TO BE BEAUTIFUL. IT IS STILL GOING TO BE BREEZY FOR YOUR SUNDAY, BUT THERE’S GOING TO BE A WHOLE LOT OF SUNSHINE WHICH WILL HELP THIS DRY OUT A LITTLE BIT. WE DID NEED IT IN SPOTS, BUT THERE ARE LOCATIONS HERE THAT WERE NOT IN A DROUGHT THAT GOT A WHOLE LOT OF RAIN, MORE THAN TWO INCHES FOR AMES, NEARLY TWO INCHES FOR MARSHALLTOWN FORT DODGE, AN INCH AND TWO THIRDS. LAMONI PICKED UP AN INCH, EVEN DOWN NEAR CENTERVILLE, NEARLY AN INCH AND A HALF. SO WE’RE STILL LOOKING AT MORE RAIN THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT, AND ESPECIALLY IF WE SEE THE STRENGTH OF THESE STORMS AMP UP A LITTLE BIT, THAT COULD EVEN PUSH SOME OF US OVER ANOTHER INCH OF RAIN. RIGHT NOW, THOUGH, LOOKING MORE LIKELY THAN I’D SAY HALF AN INCH TO MAYBE THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH AS THAT MOVES THROUGH, AND THEN THOSE AREAS UP OFF TO THE NORTHWEST STILL DEALING WITH THAT CHANCE FOR A LITTLE BIT OF LIGHT SNOW, A LITTLE BIT OF LIGHT GLAZING ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE SYSTEM AS A LITTLE BIT MORE MOISTURE MOVES ITS WAY THROUGH. SO IT IS GOING TO BE COOLER TOMORROW. TEMPERATURE WISE, WE’RE ONLY TOPPING OUT UPPER 40S TO LOW 50S. IT WILL BE BREEZY, SO WE’LL LIKELY SEE A LITTLE BIT OF A WIND CHILL AGAIN, AND WIND BACKS DOWN A LITTLE BIT INTO THE EVENING, AND WE’LL EVENTUALLY START TO SEE THOSE TEMPERATURES WARM UP INTO YOUR SUNDAY 50 FOR THE METRO FORT DODGE AT 47, A TUMBLE COMING IN AT 48, AND YOUR EIGHT DAY FORECAST PUSHING US CLOSE TO 70 BY MONDAY. DON’T FORGET WE LOSE THAT HOUR OF SLEEP ON SATURDAY NIGHT. AFTER THAT TUESDAY, MORE CHANCES FOR RAIN ROLL IN. THAT WILL COOL US DOWN A BIT TO 60 ON TUESDAY
Storms that pushed into the metro between 7-8 p.m. will continue to move northeastward into the evening with any severe threat winding down by midnight, though we may still see a few stronger storms in south/southeastern Iowa through around 2 a.m.Interactive Radar | Weather Alerts | SkycamsHeavy rain will accompany these storms as well and with the morning storms already bringing as much as 3″ to some locations we may see some ponding at times especially on streets. Northwestern portions of the state may see some light snow and even light glazing from this system as the colder air wraps around the area of low pressure. This could lead to some slick conditions between Sioux Falls and Spencer.After the storms move out we’ll keep a stiff northwest breeze across the state driving our temperatures down into the upper 40s to low 50s for highs Saturday with clouds lingering into the late morning/early afternoon. Strong southerly flow returns helping to push our temperatures back into the middle 60s Sunday and upper 60s Monday. Another low pressure system will move in from the south Tuesday spreading clouds across the state and bringing rain back to mainly the southeastern half of the state.
