'Attacked by 150 people': Lawyer who hurled shoe at ex-CJI Gavai claims assault on court premises; defends his actions again

NEW DELHI: Suspended advocate Rakesh Kishore, who hurled a shoe at former CJI BR Gavai, said on Tuesday that he was attacked in the Karkardooma Court.Claiming that he was hit with slippers by 100-150 people, Kishore said, ” When those people were hitting me, I asked them why they were doing so. They answered that it was because of the incident with the then CJI Gavai.“He (Gavai) had also insulted Sanatan Dharma,” Kishore said, defending his actions once again.A video of the incident is widely circulating on social media, showing Kishore asking, “Why are you hitting me?” before he chants, “Sanatan Dharma ki jai ho.”On 6 October, Kishore hurled a shoe at then chief justice of India B R Gavai during court proceedings. Speaking a day later, the 71-year-old claimed he acted under “divine direction”. “The almighty made it happen; I only did what happened. I had no role in it. I don’t do such things,” he told reporters, adding that his action carried “a hidden message”. Kishore linked the act to remarks made by the CJI during a 16 September hearing. “In that PIL hearing, CJI Gavai made fun of Sanatan Dharma by mocking the idol,” he told IANS. The Bar Council of India later suspended Kishore’s licence pending inquiry.
