Charles Barkley Critiques Own NCAA Tournament Commercial Frequency

Date:

NBA analyst Charles Barkley expressed his frustration during an ESPN LA broadcast on April 27, 2026, regarding the repetitive airing of his financial services commercials during the NCAA tournament. Barkley characterized the frequent broadcasts as a negative aspect of the annual basketball event.

The advertisement, titled “Sorry Sam Jackson,” became a staple of the tournament’s media rotation. Barkley addressed the situation while appearing on the morning show hosted by Jorge Sedano and Scott Kaplan, where he noted that he disliked the repetition more than the viewing public.

“That’s the only thing that sucks about March Madness,” stated Barkley, a regular broadcaster for the tournament.

The analyst explained that the high frequency of the ads stems from the sponsor’s prominent role in the collegiate competition. He noted the difficulty of escaping the footage while working in a production environment surrounded by monitors.

“Every commercial is me because of Capital One, they’re like the number one sponsor,” Barkley added.

Barkley described the logistical reality of the tournament’s broadcast structure, which utilizes four different networks simultaneously. He noted that the studio setup often results in his own image appearing on every available screen at the same time during breaks.

“Let me tell you what makes it worse. We’re on four different networks at the same time. We have all four games on in the studio. It is the most uncomfortable thing every time they go to a commercial and your damn commercial is on,” ranted Barkley.

The former NBA star mentioned that the situation often leads to awkward interactions with his colleagues in the studio. He specifically named fellow broadcasters Clark Kellogg, Kenny Smith, and Adam Zucker as those who witness the repetitive broadcasts alongside him.

“I hate it, I’m not gonna lie. And the worst thing is when they go to four commercial breaks at the same time and you’re on all four different networks…that’s the only thing I hate about March Madness,” Barkley said.
