West Long Branch, NJ – CJ Griggs’ RBI single in the top of the seventh inning snapped a 4-4 tie as Hofstra picked up a 5-4 victory over Monmouth Saturday at MU Baseball Field. The win evened the CAA series between the teams at one game apiece. Reliever Tanner Sanderoff earned the win after tossing 2 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief. Deuce Musial threw two scoreless to get his first save.
Hofstra upped its record to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in the CAA with the win. Monmouth saw its six-game winning streak halted and fell to 7-8 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Hofstra jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, scoring three in the first and one in the second. Griggs hit a sacrifice fly, Tyler Cox had an RBI single, and Gabriel Melara reached on an error that drove in a run in the first. Michael Brown had a sacrifice fly in the second.
The Hawks scored twice in the third and twice in the fifth to tie the game. Colin Richter’s two-run single in the fifth was the equalizer.
The teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
