The clutch gene. Some of us have it. Some of us don’t. I’ll level with you all right now: I don’t. When it comes to remaining calm in a serious situation, oddly I can do that, but when it comes to making a five-footer with a bunch of strangers looking on and a golf legend watching over my shoulder? It’s either ending up in the trees or two feet short. No in between.
Thankfully, this young golf fan has a bit more ice water running through his veins. On Wednesday during the Regions Tradition Pro-Am, John Daly knocked his approach shot close on the 17th hole. With five feet left to clean up, he pulled a random kid out of the crowd to give it a roll. In a move that would make even the most militant pace-of-play hardliners tip their cap, the kid took one look at the line and buried it before Daly was even clear of his backswing.

What an awesome moment for the young man, and yet another example of Daly of being golf’s biggest (and best) kid. He’s had plenty of struggles off the course over the years and many may not agree with his outspoken politics, but time and time again we’ve seen him go out of his way to make someone else’s day better. This is a prime example. Do you think this kid will ever forget the day he drained a birdie putt with John Daly’s putter? Hell no. This is a core memory—a moment to last a lifetime—and he has golf’s very own Santa Claus to thank for that.
