Malcom may have been the star of Malcolm in the Middle, but it was Lois and Hal’s love that kept the family together.
The sitcom, which ran on Fox from 2000 to 2006, is returning with Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair on April 10 on Hulu, and the couple’s long-standing relationship will serve as its focal point.
“The 40th anniversary is really the heart and soul of the story,” director Ken Kwapis told Nerdtropolis ahead of the revival’s release. “As funny as Bryan [Cranston] and Jane [Kaczmarek] are, it all comes back to something that feels 100% relatable.”
“It’s sincere,” Kaczmarek said on The Rich Eisen Show in April 2026. “I love doing it with Bryan, because we were very well connected as human beings.”
Cranston and Kaczmarek have found their perfect connections in real life, too, having married partners Robin Dearden and Rusty Long in 1989 and 2025, respectively.
Christopher Masterson, the only married sibling on the series, is also married in real life, as are Frankie Muniz and Justin Berfield, whose on-screen girlfriends never made it past a few episodes.
Here’s what to know about the real-life loves of the Malcolm in the Middle cast.

Muniz met his wife, Paige, in an unusual way, when both of them attended the February 2016 Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational — an annual golf tournament and charity event founded by Frank and Barbara Sinatra.
By August, the pair were Instagram official, with Paige calling Muniz her “main squeeze,” and him calling her “grander than the Grand Canyon.”
Muniz popped the question in November 2018, amid a lantern festival in Casa Grande, Ariz.
On Oct. 3, 2019, the couple eloped on Camelback Mountain, Ariz., with just five loved ones in attendance. “We hiked up at sunset and just got married!” Muniz told PEOPLE about his big day.
The twosome had a larger celebration in February 2020 and welcomed son Mauz Mosley Muniz on March 22, 2021.

On the show, Berfield played problem child Reese, but at home, he’s a family guy through and through.
“I’m just, like, a stay-at-home dad!” he said in a March 2026 episode of The Joe Vulpis Podcast. “I’m just chilling at home with my kid[s].”
Berfield exchanged vows with wife Liza Almeida, with whom he shares two children, in 2017.

Cranston and Dearden were coworkers before they were lovers.
In 1986, Cranston guest-starred on the CBS series Airwolf as a love-scorned man who hijacks a sorority cruise — and Dearden played one of the sorority sisters.
Though both actors were dating other people at the time, Cranston made an impression. “I thought that he was the funniest man that I had ever met,” she told PEOPLE in 2016. “I said, ‘He’s kind of cute.’ ”
After a chance meeting a year later, the twosome shared an unexpected hello kiss. “We were both like, ‘Wait that was too long, wasn’t it?!’ ” the Asteroid City star said.
Cranston proposed in the bathtub, as the couple recounted in a 2022 episode of Double Date with Marlo Thomas & Phil Donahue. ”I put [the ring] on my baby toe … and submerged the foot,” he said.
Dreaden continued, “When he asked me, this foot came up with a ring on it!”
The lovebirds exchanged handwritten vows on July 8, 1989, and in 1993, they expanded their family with the addition of daughter Taylor Dreaden.
Over the years, Cranston and Dearden have starred in several films together, including 1999’s Last Chance (“I wrote it for my wife,” Cranston told Backstage) and a season 3 episode of Breaking Bad in 2010.
In 2023, Cranston announced his intent to slow down and spend more time with his wife, telling British GQ, “For the last 24 years, Robin has led her life holding onto my tail. She’s been the plus one, she’s been the wife of a celebrity. She’s had to pivot and adjust her life based on mine … We’re uneven. I want to level that out. She deserves it.”
He later clarified in an Instagram post that he was not retiring, however, writing, “I am going to … hit the pause button for a year after I reach my 70th birthday in 2026. … It will allow me to spend time with Robin … in a way that I haven’t been able to in the last 25 years.”

The real-life matriarch of Malcolm in the Middle’s fictional family experienced a major life shift following the series’ end.
“I got divorced shortly after … and had three kids that I really wanted to raise,” Kaczmarek told The Guardian of her children with ex-husband Bradley Whitford: Frances, George and Mary Louisa.
Years later, she found love again with high school flame Rusty Long, whom she married on July 5, 2025.
“It’s at that part of your life now where we both had other spouses. Our children are raised, our careers have gone well. It’s like a fairy tale,” Kaczmarek gushed to PEOPLE.
The actress initially reconnected with Long, who has two children from a previous marriage, at their 50th high school reunion in 2024. “I couldn’t believe how interesting he’d become,” she said. “I said to him, ‘I could not make up a better man in my life right now than you.’ ”
By February 2025, Long had proposed, saying in a toast, “I’ve been in love with Jane my entire life, and I want to ask her to marry me.”

Christopher Masterson found his own Piama in Yolanda Pecoraro Masterson. Though it’s unclear exactly how the pair met, they have been in each other’s lives since at least 2014, when the actor began appearing on Yolanda’s Instagram page.
Four years later, she announced their engagement with a photo of her ring.
Though the pair are largely tight-lipped about their romance, they share sweet tributes to each other on occasion. “I will love you forever,” Yolanda captioned a 2020 birthday message for her husband.
Masterson and Yolanda tied the knot on the Amalfi Coast in August 2019 and welcomed their first child, Chiara Darby, in April 2021. They announced they were expecting a second child, a baby boy, in January 2023.
