At a time when the tech world is obsessed with how artificial intelligence (AI) may ‘disrupt’ or replace our current gadgets, the CEO of one of the world’s leading AI companies has a surprising take on the most popular Apple product: the iPhone. Speaking on the This Week in AI podcast, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas argued that the iPhone is effectively immune to being ‘disrupted’ by AI. Despite the rise of AI-powered pins, glasses and wearable devices, Srinivas believes Apple’s three “underrated” advantages keep it at the top of the food chain.“They [Apple] have the ability to take time and do things the way they want to do because they have a lot of advantages as a brand that people truly trust and, the ecosystem login is underrated, and auxiliary hardware devices, that chip advantage. All this is like, really underrated right now. According to a clip shared on X, here are the three reasons why Srinivas believes AI doesn’t change the game for Apple fans:

iPhone as ‘digital passport

First is the ‘Digital Passport’ advantage wherein, the more powerful AI becomes, the more the iPhone cements its role as users’ “digital passport.” AI can generate text and images, but it cannot replace the deeply personal and legal data stored on your device.“It has your wallet, it has all your cards, it has your passes,” Srinivas explained, adding that from health records to FaceTiming loved ones and storing “precious moments” in your photo library are human experiences that have “no connection to AI.”

Apple Silicon for the win

The second is the power of “Apple Silicon”. While other companies scramble to find enough computing power to run their AI, Apple has been playing the long game. Srinivas pointed out that Apple has a massive “chip advantage” that many people are underestimating.Apple has years of capacity already locked in for its custom Apple Silicon, which means that while other AI startups have to rent space on someone else’s servers, Apple owns the hardware that lives in your pocket. This allows them to run complex AI locally on the device, rather than in the cloud, making the experience faster and more reliable.

Security and trust in brand

Finally, the security and ecosystem trust – which is perhaps the biggest reason AI won’t “kill” the iPhone. Srinivas noted that the “ecosystem lock-in” and Apple’s reputation for privacy are huge barriers for any AI competitor. Users are far more likely to trust their sensitive data, such as banking and health records, to a brand they’ve used for a decade than to a new AI startup.
