HUBBALLI: Several major roads in Hubballi-Dharwad were waterlogged after only two to three spells of rain last week, disrupting traffic as drains overflowed.Waterlogging was reported at Unkal Cross, Unkal Lake, PB Road and several BRTS bus stations, halting traffic for long periods. Allegations were levelled against the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and BRTS for failing to clear drains, which contributed to the situation.A thunderstorm accompanied rain for over an hour on Tuesday evening, bringing relief from the scorching heat. While temperatures dipped, residents expressed unhappiness over what they termed unscientific infrastructure works.Severe waterlogging was also reported at NTTF, Tollanak, Amargol Cross, Navalur, Karnataka Bhavan, near Tulajabhavani Temple, the BRTS mixed-traffic lane, and near President Hotel. PB Road, which is under maintenance by the BRTS company, was affected by what residents cited as unscientific work, improper drainage, and a lack of cleaning, inconveniencing motorists and pedestrians.Mayur Kundagol, a motorist from Hubballi, said that unscientific roadworks were causing waterlogging. “All major roads are submerged. Heavy rain in just 20 minutes at Unkal Cross has caused flooding. Then, if rainfall continues in the rainy season, what may the situation here be?” he questioned. He demanded that the authorities clear all drains and allow rainwater to flow freely into the nalas.Umeshgouda Koujageri, corporator of HDMC ward 37, said PB Road maintenance was under the BRTS company. He said waterlogging at Unkal Cross was caused by an inadequate drainage system. “Regularly, drains would be cleaned to allow water to flow easily. Because of the unscientific BRTS bus system, problems have arisen. Soon, the BRTS would take it seriously and make a proper plan for drain flow,” he said.HDMC Commissioner Rudresh Ghali said rainfall preparedness had been planned. “By April 15, all drains and Rajanalas in the twin cities will be cleaned. The zonal-wise tender process is going on,” he said. He added that Unkal Cross Road was a major stretch where waterlogging was recorded whenever it rained. “A proper plan would be made to allow water to flow easily. Waterlogging at PB Road will be informed to BRTS,” he said.HD-BRTS general manager R Gudaraddi said 11 waterlogging-prone locations had been identified between Hubballi and Dharwad. Approval has been obtained for drainage work at three places. The remaining will also be taken up, he said.
