NEW DELHI: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was shifted from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday evening following a Delhi high court order, has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and is in a stable condition, the private hospital said.In a health update issued on Wednesday, Medanta Hospital said Wangchuk was admitted to the facility on Tuesday evening and is currently under the care of a multidisciplinary team of doctors.“Mr Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, last evening and was admitted to the ICU. He is being treated by a multidisciplinary team of doctors. Presently, he is stable, oriented, and his vital signs are within accepted parameters. All treatment being administered to him is in accordance with his informed consent,” the hospital said in a statement.Wangchuk was shifted to Medanta after the Delhi high court directed that he be moved from Safdarjung Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment after being removed from Jantar Mantar earlier this week.The court’s order came on an appeal filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, against an earlier decision declining to permit his transfer to a private hospital of his choice.Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) agitation over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and demands for reforms in the education system.The Delhi Police had maintained that Wangchuk’s hospitalisation at Safdarjung Hospital was carried out on medical advice and in compliance with court directions, while his family alleged that he was being held in an atmosphere of “detention and captivity”.Wangchuk has continued his fast in hospital and has said he would persist with it in solidarity with students injured during the clashes that erupted during the protest march.
