Steelers Finally Land Franchise QB in Way-Too-Early 2027 NFL Mock Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers added Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA Today doesn’t view him or anyone else on their roster as the long-term answer.

That’s Middlehurst-Schwartz predicts the Steelers will land Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

“Omar Khan unquestionably has a type when it comes to quarterbacks: Sturdy and strong-armed passers built to weather the elements in the AFC North,” Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote. “Pittsburgh went for that prototype in Drew Allar, but they might be in search of a more viable successor to Aaron Rodgers next year. At 6-3 and 235 pounds with no trouble pushing the ball downfield, Sorsby more than clears the bar when it comes to the Steelers’ desired traits. The Cincinnati transfer, who’s also tough to bring down in the open field as a runner, at times resembles a top-five prospect when everything is clicking, but he’ll be looking to find more consistency in his year with the Red Raiders.”

Sorsby was one of the top rising prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft class while throwing for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and just five interceptions, leading the Big 12 with a 13.5 yards-per-completion average last season. But he decided to return to college, informing Cincinnati that was entering the NCAA transfer portal.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Dallas native eventually decided to join the Texas Tech Red Raiders, where he will hope to improve his future draft stock next season.

Sorsby is no stranger to the transfer portal. He originally attended Indiana, picking the Hoosiers over a smattering of Group of Five and FCS offers.

He played one game as a true freshman and then made seven starts in 2023, but when head coach Tom Allen was fired at the end of the 2023 season, he headed into the transfer portal.

Sorsby landed at Cincinnati, where he walked into a starting role and thrived. In 2024, he threw for 2,813 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
