Speaking on his SiriusXM and Mad Dog Sports Radio show, Stephen A. Smith said he does not believe sexism played a role here. He said, “I don’t think misogyny applies in this particular case. The fact of the matter is, he’s the head coach of an NFL team. She’s a reporter. The onus is on her to make sure her objectivity is not skewed in any way.”He did not attack Russini personally. In fact, he made sure to show respect. He said, “She’s a wonderful person, she’s a damn good reporter, I respect the hell out of her, and I’m gonna give her the benefit of the doubt.” He also added that if Russini says nothing happened, he believes her unless proven otherwise.But even with that support, Smith stayed firm on one point. He said a reporter must avoid situations that can raise questions. “When you know that you are a reporter and this is a head coach of an NFL team and you cover the NFL, you can’t put yourself in that position,” he explained.Before Smith’s comments, Russini had already shared her side. She said, “Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now, before my current contract expires on June 30.” She also said she was proud of her 15-year career across NBC, ESPN, and The Athletic, and that her work should speak for itself. As of now, Mike Vrabel has not made any public comment about Russini’s exit.
