As the Middle East conflict intensifies, Iran has claimed that it destroyed a United States E-3 Sentry airborne warning and control aircraft during its recent missile and drone strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The claim comes in response to Tehran’s March 27 attack which targeted Prince Sultan Air Base, a key hub for American military operations located near Riyadh. The attack is reported to have caused significant damage to US military assets and infrastructure, while leaving at least 12 American service members injured.According to the images released on social media, an E-3 Sentry aircraft with its rear fuselage was shown completely burned out and surrounded by debris.The aircraft, identified in reports as serial number 81-0005 was stationed on a taxiway at the time of the attack. While it remains unclear whether the aircraft suffered a direct hit, defence experts highlight that even a nearby explosion can be sufficient to destroy such platforms due to shrapnel damage and the risk of fire, according to military website Warzone. The potential loss of an E-3 Sentry is particularly significant given its role in modern warfare. The aircraft serves as a critical airborne surveillance and battle management platform, capable of detecting and tracking aircraft, missiles and other threats over a radius exceeding 250 miles. It also plays a central role in coordinating air defence responses and managing complex battlefield operations in real time.
