TBM ‘Durga’ Breaks Through at Victoria Station, Marking Major Milestone for Kolkata Metro

Kolkata Metro achieved a significant construction milestone on Friday as Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Durga completed its breakthrough at Victoria Metro station, marking the successful completion of one of the underground tunnel drives between Khidderpore and Victoria on the Purple Line.The breakthrough took place at around 10.30 am in the presence of Prem Sagar Gupta, General Manager, Metro Railway, Kolkata, the Consul General of Nepal, senior officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Howrah City Police, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), L&T—the executing agency—and other dignitaries.The tunnelling work had commenced exactly a year ago on July 10, 2025. With the arrival of TBM Durga at Victoria station, the project has crossed another key milestone in the construction of the underground Metro corridor.Metro Railway officials said the successful breakthrough reflects the coordinated efforts of engineers, technicians and construction teams, who completed the tunnelling operation while adhering to stringent safety and quality standards and without disrupting traffic or normal activities on the surface.Addressing those present, General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta commended the project team for executing the complex underground work in a safe, systematic and professional manner. He said the achievement underlines the engineering capabilities and teamwork behind the city’s expanding Metro network.Once operational, the corridor is expected to strengthen Kolkata’s public transport system by offering faster, safer and more sustainable connectivity. Metro Railway said such infrastructure projects are playing a key role in modernising urban mobility and contributing to the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
