Tornadoes leave new Johnson County home unlivable – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Date:

Johnson County is dealing with the aftermath of three tornadoes, including two confirmed EF-0 twisters in Rio Vista and Cleburne, with a third in Cresson still being evaluated.

Despite the damage, officials say there are no reported injuries or fatalities.

Among those impacted is Ricardo Camas, who had just gotten the keys to his new home about a week and a half ago, only to find it severely damaged after the storm.

“We got the keys about a week and a half ago,” Camas said.

Now, the home is unlivable. The roof has been torn off and wrapped around a nearby tree, and the interior is exposed to the sky.

“You could see the sky from right in the living room,” Camas said.

From above, circular patterns in the grass suggest where the tornado may have touched down. Camas and his mother saw the destruction firsthand when they arrived at the property.

“Devastation a little bit. It’s kind of rough to put into words, but I don’t get too down on it, right, something that’s not in my control,” Camas said.

Other families across Johnson County also described the storm’s sudden impact. Amy Hamilton said she took cover in her bathroom as the tornado moved through.

“It was like a swirling sound. And I think I heard it come down and then go back up. It was really quick,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton said the storm’s force was strong enough to move boats on their property.

“It moved my son’s boat. It moved my husband’s boat,” Hamilton said.

Residents across the area are now assessing damage caused by both strong winds and hail, while beginning the cleanup process with help from neighbors and organizations like the Red Cross.

Camas said the storm has disrupted plans to finish work on his new home.

“We had painters scheduled this week, we had everything on the books. And we had to cancel everything this morning. It’s been a wild ride,” Camas said.

Officials say cleanup efforts could be complicated by more rain expected in the forecast.
