New details in Karnataka doctor murder: Wife injected herself with insulin, no suspicious entry, say cops

DHARWAD: Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into the death of a 45-year-old doctor at his apartment in Dharwad, with police revealing that the victim’s wife allegedly injected herself with insulin after the incident and is undergoing treatment in hospital. Police also said there was no suspicious entry into the apartment, indicating that no outsider is believed to have entered the house before the attack.The child is now in stable condition after undergoing treatment.According to Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashikumar, officers were initially alerted to what was believed to be a double murder.“When we reached the spot, we found Kiran, an anaesthetist, lying dead in a pool of blood in one of the rooms. In another room, his eight-year-old son had also suffered stab injuries. Everyone believed the child was dead, but when we checked, he was still breathing. We immediately shifted him to hospital, where he is now in stable condition,” officer said.“Dr Kiran’s wife, Dr Priyanka, was present inside the apartment when police arrived. According to the victim’s family, she allegedly murdered her husband and attempted to kill their son,” the officer said.“We have taken her into custody and found that she had injected herself with insulin. She has been admitted to hospital and is undergoing treatment. Doctors have advised that she is not in a condition to give any statement. We have registered a murder case, and the investigation is ongoing. There is no suspicious entry into the house,” he added.Dr Kiran Honnannavar, an anaesthesiologist at a private hospital, was found with multiple stab injuries inside a bedroom of his flat at Ranka Stello Apartments on Karnataka University Road on Wednesday evening. His eight-year-old son, Nihit, was found with severe stab injuries in another room. Although the child was initially believed to be dead, responding officers found him breathing and rushed him to hospital, where he remains in stable condition.Dr Kiran lived with his wife, Dr Priyanka Gaddanahalli, an ophthalmologist, and their son. During the preliminary investigation, officers found that relatives and friends had repeatedly called Dr Kiran’s phone from Tuesday night through Wednesday. The calls were allegedly answered by Dr Priyanka, who gave different explanations for his whereabouts, saying at various times that he was busy, had gone to the hospital, or had stepped out.Police said Dr Priyanka appeared to be in shock when officers arrived and was making incoherent statements. Following allegations made by Dr Kiran’s family, she was taken into custody for questioning.Investigators have ruled out the possibility of an outsider’s involvement, citing the apartment’s secure environment, extensive CCTV coverage, and the absence of any signs of forced entry. Police said the exact motive behind the crime and the timeline of events will be established after the post-mortem examination and further investigation.
