Buying the Seattle Seahawks for $9.6 billion sounds like the kind of purchase that would keep any accountant up at night. But for Silicon Valley billionaire Vinod Khosla, the numbers may look very different on paper. The deal, which is on course to become the second-most expensive sports franchise takeover in history, is pending formal approval from NFL owners. And beyond the headlines, there is a financial upside to this transaction that few are talking about.

How much tax could Vinod Khosla save from the Seahawks takeover?

The short answer: potentially billions. Under US federal tax law, new business owners can write off intangible assets through a process called amortization, spread over 15 years. For a sports franchise where intangible assets — think player contracts, media rights, and brand goodwill — account for 90% or more of the total value, that provision becomes extraordinarily powerful.Accounting and consultancy partner Chris Migliaccio broke it down plainly for Sportico. “If you look at a sports team, their balance sheet is going to be pretty simple,” he said. “Amortization can be a very powerful thing, especially if you are someone who’s generating income on a regular basis from non-sports sources. The fact that you have a large tax write-off can make the financial pain of buying a team significantly less.“At $9.6bn, the scale of potential deferred taxes here is unlike anything the NFL has seen before in a single transaction. Sportico now reports the Khosla family could set a new record for a tax break tied to an NFL team purchase.

Is buying the Seahawks a smart investment beyond the tax angle?

On pure football economics, the Seahawks are a solid acquisition. The franchise posted annual revenue of $624 million at last count, placing it comfortably in the top half of NFL teams. Its operating income of around $143 million ranks eighth in the league. These are not vanity numbers. They reflect a franchise with a stable fanbase, long-term stadium security through a lease at Lumen Field running until 2032, and significant upside in a city fast establishing itself as a global hub for artificial intelligence.Khosla, who made his name in Silicon Valley and co-founded Sun Microsystems, is not buying into a struggling franchise for the prestige. The Seahawks are reigning Super Bowl champions. They were sold at peak valuation — a deliberate decision by the Paul Allen estate, which inherited the team after Allen’s death in 2018. The estate’s $194 million investment in 1997 is now worth $9.6 billion, a nearly 50x return over 29 years. The Khosla family does hold a minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers, which they will need to divest as part of the deal. That will not be difficult given where NFL valuations currently stand.NFL owners are expected to vote on the sale at a special meeting in late August.
