Strong storms brought the risk of tornadoes, large hail and strong winds to the St. Louis region on Wednesday, 5 On Your Side Weather Impact Meteorologists said.
ST. LOUIS — Multiple communities in the St. Louis region is under a tornado warning after severe storms rolled in on Wednesday night.
The 5 On Your Side Weather Impact Team issued a Weather Impact Alert due to the possibility of quick, spin-up tornadoes, along with the risk of large hail and strong winds through midnight on Wednesday.
The National Weather issued a tornado warning for St. Louis City and St. Louis County until 10:30 p.m.
The National Weather had issued a tornado warning for Franklin County and parts of Gasconade and Crawford County at around 9:15 p.m., but those warnings quickly expired by 9:30 p.m.
Chief Meteorologist Scott Connell warned that the chance of isolated tornadoes is real through midnight, along with quarter-sized hail and wind gusts between 40 and 60 mph. Storms are expected to diminish through the overnight hours.
“After midnight, the only concern will be if we have any thunderstorms repeating over the same locations,” Connell said. “If that happens … then we would be talking about the potential for flash floods.”
Rain settled into the area on Wednesday morning, but did not develop into severe storms. The storms quickly exited the region, which allowed the atmosphere to recover and increased the possibility for severe storms later in the day.
The Storm Prediction Center upgraded St. Louis to a Slight risk for severe weather for Wednesday afternoon and evening. That’s an increase in severity from Tuesday’s forecast.
An Enhanced Risk for severe weather has already been placed in the region for Friday. Right now, some of our area is under a Slight risk for severe weather.
